BUNCOMBE COUNTY, situated on the northwest boundary of North Carolina.  Length, 65 ms., mean width, 22; with an area of 1,430 square miles.  The surface is generally hilly and mountainous; the soil rocky though fertile.  Seat of justice, Ashville.  Pop. in 1830, 16,281; in 1840, 10,084; in 1850, 13,425.  (Fanning's, 1853)
