CENTRE COUNTY, situated in the central part of Pennsylvania, with the west branch of Susquehanna river on the northwest. Area, 1,560 square miles. Face of the country, mountainous and hilly; soil generally rocky and sterile, but much good land along the streams. Seat of justice, Bellefonte. Pop. in 1820, 13 786; in 1830, 16,765; in 1840, 20,492; in 1850, 23,355.
